“Isn’t this just DigiLocker?” — Most people have never been told what DigiLocker actually is

We hear this a lot. "Isn't this just DigiLocker?"

It is a fair question. But it usually comes from a gap that has nothing to do with us.

It is not a locker

The name is doing a lot of damage.

"Locker" sounds like a place you keep things. A cupboard. A safe. Somewhere your life sits.

That is not what it was built to be.

DigiLocker is a connection between institutions and you. Its own developer documentation describes three parts. Issuers — government departments, boards, transport offices, universities, municipalities — who publish documents from their own records. Requesters — a bank, an employer, a college — who need to check one of those documents, and can only do so with your consent. And the platform in the middle that carries it.

You are not the one filling it. Institutions are.

Here is the detail that says it best. When your driving licence shows up in DigiLocker, you have not been given a copy. You have been given a link back to the transport department's own records. It stays true because it is still connected to the source. That is the point of it. That is also the limit of it.

Yes, there is an upload section where you can add your own files. Almost nobody does, and the ones who do find out quickly that a self-uploaded file carries none of the weight of an issued one.

So of course you do not open it often

You open DigiLocker when an institution has something for you, or wants something from you. A board result. A licence. A KYC check at a bank.

The rest of the year, there is no reason to go there.

That is not a flaw. That is the design working exactly as intended. You do not visit a pipe. You use it when something needs to come through.

And having your Aadhaar sitting in it does not mean you use it. It means a record got linked once.

The difference is direction

This is the whole thing, and it fits in two lines.

DigiLocker moves documents from institutions to you. Now. On demand. So you can prove something to somebody.

Soult moves your life from you to your family. Later. On conditions you set. So they know what to do when you are not there to tell them.

Different direction. Different moment. Different job.

One is built so you can produce proof. The other is built so your family is not left guessing.

What that changes in practice

Nobody issues the important things.

No government department issues the fact that you held a fixed deposit at a second bank. Or that the insurance policy lapsed in March. Or who your nominee is. Or where the locker key is. Or the password to your email, which is the door to everything else.

There is no issuer for any of that. So there is no way for it to arrive in a locker built around issuers.

A document is not an instruction.

Your family may hold your Aadhaar and still not know an account existed.

₹1.84 lakh crore is lying unclaimed in Indian banks. Almost none of it is lost because paperwork went missing. It is lost because nobody knew where to look.

Proof answers where is it? Your family needs an answer to what now?

Your locker is yours alone.

That is correct for a locker, and it is the problem on the one day it matters. Soult is built to hand over — to people you name, under conditions you set. Until those conditions are met, nobody sees anything. Including us.

Some of it is not paperwork at all.

Your medical wishes. Your organ donation consent. A voice note for your daughter. Why you kept a particular photograph.

No system built around certified documents has anywhere to put that. Not because it is badly built. Because that was never the job.

Use both. They are not competing.

Use DigiLocker when an office asks for a certified document. It is genuinely good public infrastructure, and it is free.

Use Soult for everything that surrounds those documents. The accounts. The passwords. The people. The instructions. The wishes.
