⌥THE HANDOVER PROTOCOL

How your family gets access
through a verified, read-only path.

When the time comes, Soult provides a clear, verified, step-by-step path for your executor to access your vault. It's a protocol designed to open, not to block, while ensuring only the right people get access at the right time.

START HERE

What an executor actually is — in plain words.

"Executor" sounds legal and heavy. It isn't. In one line: your executor is the trusted person who knows where everything is — so when your family needs it, nothing is lost. Here are the questions people ask most.

Is my executor my heir?

No — and this is the one thing worth reading twice. Your assets always pass to your legal heirs, through the legal process, according to your will. Your executor doesn't inherit anything and doesn't decide who gets what. They hold the map — they know what you have and where — so your family isn't left searching.

Are “executor”, “nominee” and “trustee” just different words for the same thing?

No — they're different roles, and they get mixed up all the time. A nominee is who a bank or insurer hands the asset to, usually as a caretaker who passes it on to your legal heirs (life insurance can be an exception). An executor is the person named in your will to carry out its instructions. A trustee manages assets held in a trust — say, for a child until they grow up. They can be the same person or three different people. On Soult, your “executor” simply means the trusted adult you authorise to access your vault, so they can find what you have and pass the map to whoever your will and the law point to.

More on this: Nominee vs legal heir in India explains who actually inherits.

So what does an executor actually do?

They're the person who knows where everything is — accounts, policies, property papers, the will, the logins — and can act on it when the time comes. Soult is the map; your will decides who gets what. Together they make the handover clean.

Does my executor need a Soult account to be named?

No. You can name anyone. To be added, they simply confirm with a phone OTP and an email OTP — that's how Soult makes sure the person is real, reachable, and aware they've been named. If they ever need to open your vault, they sign in through the executor login in the Soult app, with the same verified phone and email.

Can my child be my executor?

Only if they're 18 or older. Soult is for adults and verifies age at login, so every executor must be 18+. If your child is still a minor, name a trusted adult for now — you can change your choice anytime.

Do I still need a will?

Yes. Soult sits alongside your will — the will says who gets what; Soult tells your executor where everything is. Keep both.

Naming an executor isn't enough on its own.

Banks and insurance companies will not call your executor. The executor has to know a policy or account exists, then reach out and claim it — otherwise it can sit unclaimed for years. That's the whole point of your vault: it tells them what you have and where, so they can actually act.

TWO EXECUTOR ROLES

One for emergencies, one for the final handover.

You can name two types of executors. An Emergency Executor can sign in at any time, read-only, for urgent situations such as a medical emergency. A Named Executor gets read-only access for the final handover, only after a death claim is verified and approved.

FOR URGENCY

Emergency Executor

Can sign in at any time with read-only access — no death claim needed. Ideal for a spouse or any trusted family member who may need critical information quickly. You're emailed whenever they sign in.

FOR HANDOVER

Named Executor

Usually the person who will handle your estate. They can sign in only after a death claim is verified and approved by Soult, and then see your whole vault in read-only mode.

One person, both roles. You can assign the same person to be both your Emergency and Named Executor if you wish.
How many executors? Your plan determines how many executors you can name. See our pricing page for details.

WHO TO NAME

Pick people you trust — and name more than one.

Soult lets you name more than one executor on purpose. It's redundancy: if one person can't act, isn't reachable, or something is missed, another can step in. The goal isn't the title — it's the handover. Nothing should get lost because a single person was unavailable at the wrong moment.

There's no single right answer, but here's what families commonly choose. Mix and match to fit yours:

Children

Main / Named executor

Spouse

Emergency executor

Advocate / family lawyer

Steady, knows the process

Family doctor

Ideal for medical emergencies

Trusted family friend

Often the best neutral choice

Ideally, pick someone without a conflict of interest in your affairs — a steady, honest person who will act in your family's interest, not their own. And make sure they know they've been named: we cannot afford a typo here, and neither can you.

THE 5-STEP PROCESS

A clear, verified path to your vault.

1

Executor Initiates Handover

Your named executor raises a death claim for you from their executor dashboard in the Soult app.

2

Phone & Email Verification

Your executor's phone number and email address are confirmed by one-time passcode (OTP) when you name them, and checked again by OTP every time they sign in.

3

Document Submission

They upload a death certificate with the claim. You and your other executors are emailed when this happens.

4

Internal Review & Approval

An authorised Soult administrator reviews the claim and the uploaded certificate before approving access. Nothing is released on an unverified request.

5

Access Granted

Once approved, your account becomes read-only and your executor can sign in through the executor login in the Soult app. They can view and download information but cannot change or delete anything.

Important: Your executor never learns your MPIN or your Advanced vault password. Once access is approved, they sign in with OTP checks on their phone and email and see your vault in read-only mode. Advanced Password Keeper passwords stay locked unless you have left them your vault password or Recovery Kit.

OUR COMMITMENT & LIMITS

What Soult will (and will not) do.

Our role is to be a secure custodian and a reliable gatekeeper. We verify, we grant access based on your instructions, but we do not interpret legal documents or mediate family disputes.

We Don't Interpret Wills

Soult is not a law firm. We follow your explicit digital instructions. We do not interpret legal language or make judgments on the validity of a will.

We Don't Mediate Disputes

Our process is based on verifying the documents submitted with a claim. We cannot get involved in family disagreements or disputes over assets.

We Don't Act as Executor

We provide the platform for your chosen executor to act. Soult itself never acts as an executor, trustee, or fiduciary for your estate.

Soult is not a replacement for a will.Read about legal validity.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Built to open, not to block.

Digital asset handover is broken. Families are locked out of accounts, losing memories and assets forever. Traditional services are slow, expensive, and opaque.

Soult was designed from the ground up to solve this. Our protocol is rigorous but not impossible. It balances robust security with the practical reality that your family needs a reliable way in. We are on your family's side.
